One man was injured early Wednesday afternoon in a North Long Beach shooting that detectives are investigating as a gang-related incident, authorities said.

Police say the shooting occurred around 1:24 p.m. in the 100 block of East Market Street. Two victims were in the area when they were confronted by two other men, at least one of whom fired shots, according to the Long Beach Police Department. One of the victims was hit in the upper body, police said, while the other was not injured in the shooting.

The non-injured victim, who declined to be named, said they had just left a bike shop in the area when two men walked up to them, asked them what neighborhood they were from and shot at them.

The man who was struck in the shooting was transported by Long Beach Fire Department personnel to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries, police said. He is expected to survive, according to the LBPD.

No arrests have been made as the suspects fled the scene prior to police arriving, the LBPD said.

The 100 block of Market Street, stretching from Cedar to Pine avenues, was closed for about two hours as police conducted an investigation into the shooting. During their search for evidence, officers found bullet casings and strike markings, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

According to the LBPD, the shooting appeared to be gang-related, which the department broadly defines as any crime “committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with any criminal street gang.”

This can mean the suspect is a known, identified gang member, the victim of the crime is a known, documented gang member or a victim is hurt or killed in a gang-related crime, according to the LBPD.

North Long Beach has seen a series of shootings within the past week, including two firearm-related homicides. At least one other is being investigated as gang-related, however, friends of the victim in that shooting say he was not in a gang.
