A man was shot and injured early Monday morning after being robbed, police said.
The man told police he was walking near the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue in North Long Beach around 1 a.m. when he was approached by two men who robbed him at gunpoint. This resulted in an altercation, which led to the subsequent shooting, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
When police arrived around 1:19 a.m., the man was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body. No arrests have been made, and the suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction, the LBPD said.
During their investigation, police located evidence, including casings, indicating a shooting had occurred.
Long Beach endured a surge of gun violence in 2020 and 2021, with the total number of shootings reaching the highest point in at least six years. That spike, however, eased somewhat in the first quarter of 2022.
Data provided by the LBPD shows there were 94 shootings in the first three months of 2022 compared to 130 in the first three months of 2021. Numbers for April 2022 weren’t immediately available.
