A man was stabbed Saturday morning while walking in Long Beach’s South Wrigley neighborhood, police said.

The stabbing occurred sometime around 12:28 a.m. in the 2100 block of Chestnut Avenue, authorities said. Officers were called to the area shortly after reports of a domestic violence incident, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

When first responders arrived at the area, they found a man suffering from stab wounds to the upper body, according to the LBPD.

Police say the victim was walking in the residential area of 21st Street and Chestnut Avenue when he crossed paths with an “unknown number of subjects,” one of which brandished a weapon and stabbed the man multiple times before fleeing.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the victim to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police say the wounded man was involved in the domestic violence incident prior to the stabbing, but that the two events do not appear to be related. No other injuries were reported.

No other suspect information was provided and a motive for the stabbing is not clear, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
