Police said they issued eight citations and towed two vehicles Friday night after responding to three separate street takeover events across East and North Long Beach.

Police arrived to the first street takeover event sometime around 10:54 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Stearns Street near Cal State Long Beach.

Less than 20 minutes later, officers were sent to break up another street takeover in the area of Granada Avenue and Second Street near Belmont Shore, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

At around 12:50 a.m. Saturday, the LBPD responded to the third street takeover event, located on Paramount Boulevard and South Street in North Long Beach, authorities said.

“Through their response, officers were able to safely end each street takeover event,” according to the LBPD.

Earlier this month, the Long Beach City Council approved a new ordinance making it illegal to be a spectator during street takeover and racing events.

The ordinance was requested last year as a host of other cities in the region were adopting, or had already adopted, similar laws.

Once the ordinance is signed into law it will apply to any kind of illegal street takeovers that happen on city streets or parking facilities accessible to the public

A person can be considered “present” at the event if they’re found to be within 200 feet of the reckless driving exhibition, according to the ordinance’s language.

Street takeovers often involve dozens or sometimes hundreds of attendees blocking off city intersections where drivers perform stunts in their cars. Serious injuries and some deaths have occurred at street takeovers in recent years.
