A 27-year-old man died from injuries suffered when he was struck by a vehicle while he was walking on a freeway on-ramp in Norwalk, authorities said Saturday morning.

California Highway Patrol officers responded about 8 p.m. Friday to the Norwalk Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound 5 Freeway and located the victim about 800 feet south of Norwalk Boulevard, according to CHP Officer B. Whittenberg.

A preliminary investigation determined the man, identified as Jose Nazareth of Anaheim, was walking in the No. 1 lane of the on-ramp when he was struck by a 2012 Honda driven by 68-year-old Emile Kheir of Fullerton, Whittenberg said.

Nazareth suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital where he later died, Whittenberg said.    Kheir was not hurt and he cooperated with investigators at the scene. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor for Kheir, but it was unclear whether Nazareth was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash, Whittenberg said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash was asked to call Officer Boyd at the Santa Fe Springs CHP office at (562) 868-0503.
