A man was shot Thursday night while sitting in his car near Long Beach’s popular Retro Row business district, police said.

Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Allison Gallagher said the man was sitting in his vehicle around 7 p.m. in the 1900 block of E. Fourth Street when two men outside fired shots at him, injuring him.

The man in the car managed to drive himself away from the area before crashing into a parked car in the 300 block of Cherry Avenue, Gallagher said, less than a quarter of a mile from where the shooting happened.

Officers and gang detectives responded to the scene where they found the man with gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body. The Long Beach Fire Department transported him to a nearby hospital where he is in stable condition, Gallagher said. No other injuries were reported during the shooting.

Police say they found bullet casings at the scene and are investigating the shooting. Thus far, the motive remains unclear and no suspect information is known at the time as the shooters fled the area on foot before police could arrive.
