A Compton resident died early this morning after he crashed into a metal guardrail on the 710 Freeway on-ramp, just north of Ocean Boulevard, police said.

Long Beach police say the 23-year-old man was driving northbound on the 710 Freeway on-ramp around 2:07 a.m. when he “failed to turn with the curve” of the ramp and crashed.

Officers arrived soon after and found the driver unconscious in a 2013 Honda Civic. They began “life-saving measures” until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived to transport the man to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Officers do not believe the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but, they said, speed may have been a factor.

The driver’s name has not been released as authorities work to notify his next of kin.
