Long Beach police acted swiftly in saving a man who jumped off the second story of an apartment building in an attempt to strangle himself with a cord tied around his neck early Monday morning, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment building on the 5900 block of Locust Avenue in North Long Beach on Monday, December 28 at 2:30AM regarding an attempted suicide call, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

“As they attempted to talk to a man (with a cord around his neck) down off a second story exterior landing, he jumped,” officials told the Post via email.

One of the officers quickly grabbed the man’s legs and lifted him up in an attempt to relieve the pressure on his neck, according to authorities. Another officer ran upstairs and cut the cord.

The man was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

LBPD officials remind the public of available services such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which has 24/7 access at 800.273.8255.

Prevention information is available through the National Institute of Mental Health website.
