A man is expected to survive after being shot in a residential area of North Long Beach, police say.
Long Beach police Lt. Paul Gallo said officers responded around 10:14 p.m. to the 200 block of East 47th Street, near Scherer Park, after reports that a man had been shot in the area.
When officers located the scene, they found a man who had sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his upper torso and lower body, police said. An investigation revealed that the man was outside a residential area when an “unknown” number of suspects approached him and shot him, LBPD said.
Fire personnel arrived soon after and transported the man to a local hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.
“The suspect is outstanding and the incident is being investigated by gang detectives,” Gallo said. Still, the motive for the shooting remains unclear, LBPD spokesperson Allison Gallagher said.

At the scene, police collected evidence, including bullet casings. No other injuries were reported, LBPD said.
Local neighbors who had just arrived in the area gathered one by one outside the yellow police tape that blocked off the dead-end street, wondering why they weren’t allowed to go into their homes. One officer said it would be hours before the area reopened.
A resident who lived one block over on West 47th Street, Gustavo Ramírez, 54, said he heard six gunshots Friday night. Moments later, a white sedan with heavily tinted windows crashed into a palm tree in front of his home. Alarmed at the situation, Ramírez said he carefully watched the car wreck from his home to see if anyone would get out.
After about 30 minutes of the car idling with its lights on, and no sign of anybody inside, Ramírez left his home and crossed the street over to where police were investigating the shooting. When he alerted police about the wreck, squad cars steadily began to swarm the sedan on West 47th Street, another dead-end street.
For more than an hour, neighbors watched as police searched for a suspect, using K9 units to try to and sniff them out. At one point, officer’s used their PA system in a small standoff with who they believed at the time was a suspect inside the vehicle.
“Exit the vehicle with your hands up,” one officer announced on the PA system. After getting no response for several minutes, police slowly opened the doors of the white sedan to find that there was nobody inside.
K9 barking would ensue moments later as police continued their search around the neighborhood.
Gallo said that it is not clear at this time how the white sedan may have been involved with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
