The Mark Twain Neighborhood Library closed early today, and will remain closed until at least Monday because of the need to carry out “unexpected repairs,” library officials announced this afternoon.

“It’s a minor malfunction of the security gate at the front doors,” said Cathy De Leon, manager of Branch Library Services.

The door can’t be secured correctly, which prevents people from entering and exiting the building through the main doors, said De Leon. Because it’s now considered a “safety hazard,” library officials decided to close the branch.

De Leon added that library officials are waiting on a replacement part but anticipate that it will be repaired by Monday, Dec. 13.

The Mark Twain branch first opened in 1930 on Rose Avenue, but in August 2007 moved into a 16,000-square-foot location at 1401 E. Anaheim St.

The branch was the first building in Long Beach to receive the Silver Medal LEED Award from the U.S. Green Building Council, according to the city.
