A man riding a motorcycle died after crashing into a car stopped at a red light near Downtown Long Beach early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. when the motorcyclist hit the rear of an SUV stopped at Broadway and Alamitos Avenue, Long Beach police said. Police believe the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Broadway at “a high rate of speed” when he collided with the SUV, according to LBPD spokesperson Brandon Fahey.

When officers arrived on the scene at 2:13 a.m. they found the man unconscious in the street with serious injuries to his upper body. The Long Beach Fire Department transported the motorcyclist to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said. Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified him.

The occupants in the SUV were unharmed, remained on the scene and cooperated with police, authorities said. Police said they believe speed along with impaired and distracted driving were possible factors in the crash.
