A motorcyclist allegedly speeding away from a California Highway Patrol officer early Monday morning crashed into a minivan just off the freeway, killing both himself and the woman driving the other vehicle. The motorcyclist was identified as Frank Aldana Escalante, 23, of Lakewood and the woman as 65 year-old Marianne Krone of La Palma.

The incident began at around 6:05AM when a CHP officer spotted Escalante riding in excess of 100mph on the southbound 605 freeway. When the officer attempted to pull him over, Escalante exited the freeway at Spring St. and kept going.

According to a CHP official, the officer briefly pursued the motorcyclist but discontinued the chase. At around 6:10AM, a crash involving Escalante and a minivan was reported at Wardlow Road and Norwalk Boulevard. It was not clear how fast the motorcycle was going when it hit a minivan, but it was going fast enough that the van flipped over several times, and the motorcycle burst into flames, CHP said.

The intersection was closed while an investigation was conducted into the crash. No other persons were injured.
