The community came together at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Houghton Park Community Center in North Long Beach last Saturday.

The ceremony featured speeches from Vice Mayor Rex Richardson who has been working on activating Uptown and recently launched a farmer’s market at the park. Assemblyman Anthony Rendon and city park officials also spoke.

All officials thanked the community, supporters and those that voted for Measure A, which is helping fund the project. Park Development Officer Meredith Reynolds said she was glad the community continues to be engaged in the process and designing of Houghton Park’s new community center building.

“Many people refer to the park as the heart of the Uptown community,” said Richardson. “This is and has been the facility for so many people.”

Richardson said the center will have a new entryway and some of the old facilities, not including the original, will be demolished. The center will also include a sports gym auditorium.

The new Houghton Park Community center building is expected to be completed next year.
