The City of Long Beach celebrated the activation of a completely renovated intersection at Pacific Avenue and 14th Street today, highlighting new LED street lights and the future construction of way-finding signage, new pedestrian sidewalks and sharrows.

The city enhanced the intersection as part of its Bicycle System Gap Closure, which connects existing bike infrastructure in the area and sections of Harding Street, Del Amo Boulevard, San Antonio Drive and Del Mar Avenue.

“The community had requested this traffic signal to improve the pedestrian safety in the neighborhood,” said Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez in a statement. “This intersection is busy with residents of all ages accessing Washington Middle School, 14th Street Park, the Michael K. Green Skate Park and the Long Beach Rescue Mission; I am excited that we are promoting walkability and connectivity in the Washington Neighborhood.”

The new lights are part of a citywide retrofit program that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 7,300 metric tons yearly, being that LED lights shine brighter, at a cooler temperature and last longer than HPS lights.
