Long Beach city councilmembers Patrick O’Donnell and and Val Lerch have announced their support of candidate Bonnie Lowenthal in the upcoming June race for the 54th District State Assembly seat. Lowenthal, a current 1st District councilwoman, will face off against current 7th District councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga in the June 3 primary.
Both candidates spent Monday on the picket lines for fairer treatment of Press-Telegram staffers, while Reyes Uranga appeared at a Beer & Politics public forum concerning the newspaper’s future last night. But it was Lowenthal who tallied up two endorsements from fellow council members.
“As a teacher myself, I am deeply impressed by Bonnie Lowenthal’s commitment to improving our public schools,” read a statement from Councilman O’Donnell. “[Her] work on the Long Beach School Board helped turn around a struggling urban school district. Bonnie will be the champion our kids need in Sacramento.”
Councilman Lerch mentioned Lowenthal’s enthusiasm for cleaning up the air around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and called her “smart, prepared and tenacious.”
