A man who died after being hit by a car early this morning at the intersection of Lindero Avenue and Ocean Boulevard has been identified as 84-year-old Fikre Workneh, police said.

A Long Beach Police Department special services officer witnessed the incident just before 6:30 a.m. and called in for assistance, according to an LBPD press release. The officer performed life-saving measures until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived.

Firefighters determined the man was dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation found the man was walking in traffic, outside the intersection’s crosswalks. He was hit by a silver sedan that was heading eastbound along Ocean Boulevard through a green light.

The driver, an unidentified 48-year-old Long Beach resident, remained on scene and is cooperating with police, police said. The driver had a valid license, authorities said, adding that speed, and impaired or distracted driving are not believed to be factors.

Investigators had Ocean Boulevard shut down from Temple to Kennebec avenues until around noon.
