A man who pulled out a handgun while being pursued by police was shot early Sunday morning near Long Beach Blvd. and 7th St. The man and another arrested suspect are believed to be have earlier fled the scene of a nearby domestic violence dispute.
At around 12:15AM Sunday morning, the Long Beach Police Department responded to an unknown trouble call near 8th Avenue and Pine Street, an incident that upon arrival, officers determined to be domestic violence in nature. The suspect, however, had fled the scene before the arrival of police.
Peripheral officers within the neighborhood were notified and at 12:45AM the suspect’s vehicle was located at Long Beach Boulevard and 6th Street. As officers drove up to the vehicle, two male black subjects exited and started running in opposite directions.
One of the car occupants, 25-year-old Long Beach resident Rashad Minor, ran through a parking lot along 7th Street while officers pursued him on foot. During the chase Minor pulled out a handgun and the pursuing officer subsequently shot Minor in the upper torso. Following transportation and surgery at a nearby hospital, Minor remains in stable condition. He is being booked for charges of assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer.
The other suspect who fled the car was also taken into custody near Pine and 8th St. He is not being identified, but police say he was the domestic violence suspect from the initial dispatch.
As with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting.
