Cal State Long Beach students and staff will no longer have to worry about displaying their parking permits on their car’s dashboards, beginning next week.

The university’s parking and transportation services will upgrade their parking technology to a paperless system starting Monday, August 15, the school announced last week.

The new parking technology will consist of a License Plate Recognition (LPR) feature and a Parkmobile app, according to a CSULB bulletin.

Eventually, people who park in the short-term parking spots will be able to pay through the app, rather than rush to the meter or risking the chance of a parking ticket.

“LPR uses information currently provided when obtaining an employee permit and that information is referenced only against a campus database used to verify appropriate permitting on campus,” the bulletin stated.

School officials said the paperless system will increase sustainability by not using additional ink, paper, plastic, postage or envelopes on physical permits. When driving different cars, students and staff will no longer need to worry about moving permits, because the system can hold multiple license plates per permit.

The CSULB Parking website states that parking enforcement rules will not change, and the process to appeal a citation is still be available.
