Four Park Rangers have received Meritorious awards for their heroic efforts in evacuating visitors at El Dorado Nature Center as a fire broke out on the east side of the facility on August 19, 2007.
The Long Beach Parks and Recreation Commission, and Phil Hester, Director of Parks, Recreation and Marine, presented Meritorious awards to Sergeant William Mallery, Ranger John Hill, Ranger Kevin Phillips, and Ranger Richard Ramirez.
“Without the immediate assistance of the Rangers, the visitors could have easily become confused in the smoke-filled park,” Hester said. “The Ranger’s bravery, teamwork, and quick response to protect life are to be commended. These Rangers are an outstanding example of the dedication of the Long Beach Park Ranger Program.”
On August 19, the Rangers observed fire, smoke, and burning embers floating throughout the Center. They began a systematic search over 100 acres and three miles of walking trails. Sergeant Mallery evacuated a family of eight from the west side of the park. Rangers Hill and Phillips evacuated another eight park patrons as well as two members of the Nature Center Staff. Ranger Ramirez evacuated a family of seven, while carrying a stroller with a baby inside for a considerable distance to ensure the safety of the family.
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine gives Meritorious awards to staff who exhibit “strength, spirit and personal bravery.”
