A man was killed early Sunday morning after being hit by a car while crossing Second Street, police say.

Officers were dispatched to the area of Second Street and Marina Drive at approximately 12:57 a.m. regarding an injury traffic collision, where they located a pedestrian suffering from critical injuries.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded and determined the pedestrian, whom authorities later identified as Long Beach resident Hiram Argust Jr., 44, to be deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that an unknown vehicle was traveling eastbound on Second Street. As the vehicle crossed the bridge from Appian Way, it struck the pedestrian who was crossing Second Street outside of a marked crosswalk, police say.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival, according to police.
