The breakwater off of Long Beach’s shore has no trouble keeping out waves, but apparently it has a more difficult time with pirates. Dozens of the scoundrels captured Belmont Pier over the weekend as part of the Charter Communications Long Beach Sea Festival summer events.
Peg-legs and pistols were everywhere along the pier and beach, as pirates scoured the land in search of booty, rum and—ooh, lookie!—a good view of the sailboat races. Hosted boat rides took visitors aboard the pirate ship, while landlubbers enjoyed swordfights and treasure hunts.
City photographer extraordinaire Diana Lejins braved the chaos to bring us these images, before the raiders retreated to their pirate ships or—like the ones parked next to me—Honda CR-Vs.
Sea Festival events will be held all summer. Upcoming events are the National Tennis Open at El Dorado Park (until Wednesday) and a Thursday Night Twilight Concert at Drake Park this week. Click here for a full summer schedule.
