With the LA County area being one of the most expensive home markets in the nation, Habitat for Humanity LA has been helping families that earn 30% to 80% of the median family income receive a hand-up on building a home of their own.

Single mother LaTonya Thompson and her two children, son Onekieo and daughter LaMeisha, had been working in retail for 13 years before she approached Habitat LA. That partnership obviously proved fruitful: through required classes, Thompson learned how the housing market works and dedicated some 500 hours of construction time to her own home.

“This home will be a place where my kids and I can feel safe regardless of what goes on in life,” Thompson said.

The home in North Long Beach began construction in March and was completed this past weekend.
