Long Beach police on Wednesday arrested a man suspected killing a liquor store employee trying to prevent him from robbing the store, officials said.

Police said they arrested 33-year-old Jamal Darby of Los Angeles at about 10:30 a.m. after finding evidence linking him to the crimes.

The victim, 57-year-old Victor Talavera of Long Beach, had been trying to prevent Darby from taking items from the store near the intersection of Anaheim Street and Magnolia Avenue on the night of July 24, according to police. Talavera climbed onto the hood of the car and hung on for about three blocks before the driver shook him off, police said.

Talavera fell into the eastbound lanes of Anaheim Street where another driver stopped to help him. He died at the scene.

Police sent out photos and video of the suspect and his vehicle in an attempt to identify him.

Darby was arrested, while driving the car police believe was used in the killing, on suspicion of murder, robbery and burglary. He is being held in jail on a $2 million bail.
