Detectives believe a 91-year-old man intentionally crashed his car into a pole near Millikan High School Saturday afternoon, killing himself, according to Long Beach police.

The crash happened around 3:45 p.m. in a parking lot in the 2900 block of Palo Verde Avenue, department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said.

“Arriving officers located a single vehicle that had collided with a pole,” Pratt said. Paramedics also arrived and determined the driver was dead.

Police were able to find video of the crash, according to Pratt. They’re treating the wreck as a suicide because that and other preliminary evidence show it was intentional, Pratt said.

Medical examiners will make the official determination after completing an autopsy, according to a spokeswoman for the coroner’s office.
