Long Beach police have identified 30-year-old Jaevion Tasby as the man shot and killed Sunday morning in the Willmore neighborhood, the Police Department announced Monday.

Officers were dispatched to Daisy Avenue between Ninth and 10th streets just before 10 a.m. Sunday after reports of a shooting. Police found Tasby with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and rendered aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported him to a local hospital, where he died.

“We just left the hospital. His mom’s not really mentally there,” a man who identified himself as Tasby’s cousin, but who declined to give his name, told the Post Sunday afternoon. “We’re just trying to come together and figure out a plan.”

The family member said that Tasby was working on a car when he decided to walk down to a nearby corner store. He was shot when he returned to his apartment building, the man said.

The investigation is ongoing, but the LBPD said the shooting does not appear to be random.

For his part, the family member said Tasby had “witnessed something,” and he thinks Tasby was gunned down to keep him quiet.

Multiple neighbors said Tasby often worked on cars in front of his apartment. When he could not figure out an auto issue, he would walk over to other neighborhood mechanics and talk shop, they said.

“He would come borrow tools and hang around,” one neighbor said. “He didn’t look like anyone that invited trouble. He was cool.”

The neighbors noted that the area is not safe, saying they do not let their kids play at nearby Drake Park or stay out after the sun goes down.

In an Instagram message, a friend who asked to not be named said it was his car—a white Lexus—Tasby was working on that morning.

“We became friends after working on my car—I’m just shook,” he said. “He texted me at 8 a.m. [Sunday] and I text him back at 10:15. I’m just in shock.”
