A man was shot to death Thursday afternoon near Long Beach’s Gumbiner Park, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue around 12:10 p.m. following reports of multiple gunshots in the area and a person down in an alleyway, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

There, they found the man lying in the alleyway on East La Reina Way suffering from several gunshot wounds to the upper body. Despite efforts by emergency personnel to keep him alive, the man was declared dead at the scene, the LBPD said. Police identified him as 35-year-old Curtis Ray Yarbrough.

Police said Yarbrough was in the alley on East La Reina Way when an unknown male suspect approached him and fired multiple shots at him.

Police have not yet identified the suspect or a motive, and the investigation is ongoing.

Of the 33 homicides reported this year by the LBPD, 23 have been shooting deaths.
