Long Beach police officers were investigating a non-fatal shooting that took place Friday night at about 9:45 p.m.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at the 1100 block of Via Wanda near the Carmelitos housing project, police said.

A male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower extremity was located at the scene, according to police, and was transported to a local hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

Police did not provide many details about the suspect, describing him only as a man who approached the victim on foot.

The incident is being investigated as being possibly gang-related, police said. The LBPD defines gang-related crimes as any crime committed “for the benefit of, at the direction of or in association with any criminal street gang.”

Gang unit detectives responded to the scene as the investigation remains going.
