A Los Angeles man was killed Wednesday afternoon when a 17-year-old motorist collided with his vehicle in the city’s Marina area, authorities said.

The incident happened at 3:53PM at Studebaker Road and Pacific Coast Highway.

The teen driver was traveling south on PCH in the No. 1 lane in his 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse when he swerved to the left to avoid a vehicle making a left turn and then swerved back to the right, according to a Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) release sent out Thursday.

“Upon swerving back to the right, the Mitsubishi traveled into and across the eastbound lanes of Studebaker Road west of PCH where it collided with a 2016 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 58-year-old male resident of Los Angeles,” officials stated. “The Toyota was in the No. 3 eastbound lane of Studebaker waiting to make a right turn onto PCH.”

An off-duty fireman rendered emergency aid to the Corolla driver, identified as Balmor Alvarenga, but he was determined dead at the scene, authorities said. The teen motorist, who is from Huntington Beach, was transported by Long Beach paramedics to a local hospital with moderate injuries

Arriving officers found the cars on the grass parkway of the southwest corner of the intersection.

According to a preliminary investigation, the teen was weaving in and out of traffic before the crash, with one witness stating that he was traveling in excess of 60 miles per hour.
