Democratic state Senate candidate Tom Umberg for the first time pulled ahead of state Sen. Janet Nguyen, R-Garden Grove, according to results released today by the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

Umberg leads Nguyen by 438 votes in the district which covers portions of East Long Beach. Umberg had been gaining steady ground on Nguyen since Election Night as mail-in and provisional ballots have been tallied.

There are about 6,500 ballots to still be counted in the Orange County portion of the 34th Senate District, which covers about 13 percent of the City of Long Beach, including Belmont Shore, Belmont Heights, the university and much of East Long Beach.
