UPDATED 1:12PM| An original version of this story incorrectly stated that the Los Angeles County Measure J had passed with 64.2 percent of the vote. While it did receive a 64.2 percent yes vote, the measure needs a two-thirds majority to pass and is therefore currently not passing.
Andrew Veis with LA County Supervisor Don Knabe’s office says that votes are still being tabulated, but “as of right now, the measure has not passed.”
UPDATED 8:59AM | With 100 percent of all California and L.A. County precints reporting as of Wednesday morning, the end has come to one of the most intense local election seasons in recent history.
In the hotly contested 47th Congressional District, Democratic State Senator Alan Lowenthal beat Republican 3rd District City Councilman Gary DeLong 55.4 percent to 44.6 percent after a campaign full of stalking accusations and public outbursts that left both candidates with their share of ups and downs. The District was predicted to lean Democratic, but pre-election poll numbers proved themselves unreliable in predicting who was actually in the lead going into decision day.
When early voting results were released after the polls closed at 8PM Tuesday night, DeLong had a close two percent lead over Lowenthal. That gap soon evened out–the two were both dead even with 50.0 percent each at one point of the reporting process–with Lowenthal eventually finishing the race with an 11 point lead.
Long Beach’s Measure N, known by supporters as the “Living Wage Measure,” passed by more than 25 points with 63.22 percent of the vote. And the city’s Measure O, the measure that would have changed the date of Long Beach’s civic elections, was voted down by 54.96 percent of voters.
In the 44th Congressional District, Democratic Congresswoman Janice Hahn won the seat 60.0 percent over Democrat Laura Richardson’s 40.0 percent. Richardson’s campaign was marred by allegations of political misconduct and in August, the incumbent congresswoman currently representing the 37th District was formally reprimanded by the House Ethics Committee for misuse of her staff.
