Just over 13% of ballots from Long Beach voters had been returned as of Monday afternoon, meaning overall voter turnout will likely be lackluster compared to the 2020 primary.

Most of those early voters (nearly 70%) are over the age of 50, according to the nonpartisan firm Political Data Intelligence.

The new 42nd Congressional District, where Assemblymember Cristina Garcia and Mayor Robert Garcia are both trying to make the runoff, had just 11% of its ballots returned as of Tuesday morning. Democratic voters make up the bulk of those with 26,295 ballots cast.

When it comes to City Council races, the 9th District in North Long Beach had the lowest percentage of ballots returned, just 8%. On the opposite end of the spectrum was the 3rd District in southeast Long Beach, where 19% of registered voters had already returned their ballots.

Those numbers could have implications for the mayoral race. The two frontrunners, Councilmember Rex Richardson and Councilmember Suzie Price, represent the 9th and the 3rd, respectively.
