The California State Alliance of YMCAs announced this week that State Assemblymember Isadore Hall III has been named its 2012 Legislator of the Year for his ongoing efforts to create policies that empower young people throughout California.

For the last three years, Hall—whose 52nd District includes portions of Long Beach, Paramount, Compton and South Los Angeles—has worked to support civic education programs including the YMCA Youth and Government, which for more than half a century has helped high school students become active and engaged citizens.

This year, Hall also authored SB233, which created the California YMCA Youth and Government fund and will allow taxpayers to voluntarily donate to a number of civic education programs through a check box on their income tax forms. The bill was recently signed into law by the governor and will become effective on next year’s tax forms.

Hall will be recognized at the California State Alliance of YMCAs Fall Conference to be held today in Long Beach.
