Financing data from the Federal Election Commission’s latest quarterly reports are in this week and they show that during the period from July 1 through September 30, 47th Congressional District hopeful and 3rd District Councilmember Republican Gary DeLong outraised opponent State Senator Alan Lowenthal by less than $10,000.
According to the two candidate’s federal disclosure reports, DeLong collected $350,408 during the time compared to Lowenthal’s $344,035. Of total contributions made during the election cycle, DeLong has $478,532 cash on hand while Lowenthal has $407,318. Despite these most recent fundraising and cash-on-hand numbers, DeLong has a large lead in fundraising overall with more than $1.2 million collected since early 2011 compared to Lowenthal’s $857,000.
With the election only three weeks away, these are the final FEC reports that will be released before votes are cast and indicate the amount of money each candidate is working with going into this final stretch.
DeLong and Lowenthal’s close fundraising numbers from over the summer are paralled by the close poll numbers that emerged during the same time period. Though many political sites (including the New York Times and Roll Call) say that the newly redrawn 47th is a Democratic-leaning district, a barrage of conflicting polls have alternately indicated that Lowenthal and DeLong each have commanding leads.
In the 44th District race—which includes portions of North Long Beach—the most recent FEC reports show that Democratic Congresswoman Janice Hahn outraised rival Democratic Congresswoman Laura Richardson nearly 25 to one.
Hampered by a formal reprmanding from the House Ethics Committee (which came with an unprecedented $10,000 fine), Richardson raised only $6955 over the summer to Hahn’s $179,241. In speaking to the Press-Telegram about the dismal fundraising gains this quarter, Richardson “pointed to [her] relatively more favorable cash-on-hand numbers.” Richardson had $68,498 as of the September 30 filing while Hahn had $131,727.
