1st District councilmember and mayoral candidate Robert Garcia received a major endorsement from one of the top City unions Thursday. The board of the Long Beach Police Officers Association voted to endorse Garcia for mayor, citing his commitment to public safety as a key factor in their decision.

“Vice Mayor Robert Garcia has a strong record of supporting public safety and the men and women of the Police Department,” said POA President Steve James. “As Chair of the Public Safety Committee, Robert has worked with us to achieve the lowest crime rate in 41 years. He knows Long Beach and will be a great Mayor.”

Vice Mayor Garcia is a USC professor in public policy and a two-term city councilmember. He attended USC and Cal State Long Beach, where he received his Ed.D in Educational Leadership in 2010.

Garcia is running against Damon Dunn, a former NFL player and businessman who in February received the city’s other majr union endorsement–the Long Beach Firefighters Associaiton.

At the primary nominating election on April 8, Garcia received 25.4% of the vote while Dunn garnered 22.3%. The two will face off to be the city’s next mayor in the general election on June 3.
