Local officials Laura Richardson (D) and Dana Rohrabacher (R) were two of six Congressmembers present duing a discussion about additional federal funding for the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles yesterday, hosted by port authorities, who estimate that at least $4 billion will be needed to upgrade port infrastructure and remain competitive in the market.

This Press-Telegram article points out upgrades in desperate need such as deteriorating roads an rail lines, as well as the Desmond Bay Bridge and its “diapers.”

Richardson and Rohrabacher were in attendance as part of the House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation and Infrastructure, which includes four other members of Congress that heard about three hours of discussion on the issue yesterday.

“The fact that you have these members out here hearing this first-hand is a huge step forward in terms of them understanding what the needs are and how they can help,” the story quotes Richardson. “This meeting is more important than people may realize.”
