A bicyclist was hospitalized in critical condition after a driver crashed into him on Spring Street near the 605 Freeway, according to Long Beach police.

The collision happened around 4:45 a.m. as the bicyclist was headed west on Spring Street just west of the freeway, police said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash. Officers responded and questioned the driver but later released him, Long Beach police spokesman Alvino Herrera said. They’re still investigating, he said.

Paramedics also responded and took the bicyclist to a local hospital, according to police.

Westbound Spring Street was shut down for a few hours while investigators gathered evidence from the crash.
