4:00am | President Obama announced late yesterday that he will nominate Long Beach Harbor Commissioner Mario Cordero to the Federal Maritime Commission. In a press release President Obama referred to Cordero and other appointments by saying, “I am confident that these impressive men and women will make valued additions to this administration. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.”
Founded in its current form in 1961, the Federal Maritime Commission is an independent regulatory agency responsible for the regulation of ocean shipping. Cordero’s nomination to the commission requires U.S. Senate approval.
A Long Beach workers’ compensation defense attorney and long-time active member of the Long Beach community, Cordero was first appointed and confirmed to the Long Beach Harbor Commission in 2003 by Mayor Beverly O’Neill. Cordero was reappointed by Mayor Bob Foster and confirmed to a second six-year term in 2009. Mr. Cordero also has served as Vice President and President of the Board.
