Voters passed Proposition 8 Tuesday night, reinstituting a sentence in the State Constitution that was removed by the California Supreme Court in May to allow the legalization of same-sex marriages. Today, with the passage of Prop 8, the State Constitution returns to its original message and defines marriage as being only between a man and a woman.
In monetary terms, California is expecting a loss in the tens of millions of dollars due to lost sales taxes now that Prop 8 has passed.
Prop 8 passed by the absolute slimmest of margins, with the race too close to call until 100% of the votes had been counted at 3:24am. Voters decided to pass Prop 8 with a 50.4% approval to 49.6% disapproval.
