More than 200 people participated in the 11th annual International Surfing Day in Huntington Beach, hosted by Surfrider Foundation’s Long Beach, Huntington/Seal Beach, and Newport Beach chapters.
The event included a beach clean-up and a successful attempt at breaking two Guinness World Records, including the most people riding a surfboard, and the world’s longest custom-crafted surfboard.
Nearly 70 people were able to ride the large surfboard, according to officials.
“International Surfing Day is about more than surfing. It’s a day on which the Surfrider Foundation hopes to encourage people across the world to get involved in protecting the ocean and beaches,” A press release stated.
Officials said more than 115 plastic trash and over six pounds of cigarette butts were collected.
Among the participating organizations included California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), Downey High School, FedEx and various Girl Scout troops.
