HEAT

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to high-80s on Friday amid a warming trend set last several days, according to the National Weather Service.

Some areas will “be flirting with record highs,” said Kristen Stewart, a meteorologist with the NWS, attributing the heat to a ridge of high pressure that will bring Santa Ana winds to the area Friday and Saturday.

A gale wind warning was in effect until at least 3 a.m. Friday.

Temperatures in Long Beach will reach a high of 80 degrees on Thursday, 86 degrees on Friday and 82 degrees on Saturday. Temperatures will then settle into to the high 70s, according to the forecast.

Long Beach officials on Wednesday urged the public to continue to follow stay-at-home orders issued to stop the spread of COVID-19, and take measures to protect themselves from the warm weather.

Dr. Anissa Davis, the city’s health officer, said Wednesday residents should stay hydrated, wear light clothing and maintain 6 feet of separation from others. Residents are also being asked to carry a mask and wear it public when in essential businesses or anywhere others are in proximity.
