Employees of a waste-disposal company in Signal Hill decided to evacuate their facility after finding a possibly hazardous device dropped off at their weekly recycling event, authorities said.

Signal Hill police were called to EDCO Disposal at 2755 California Ave. shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning to deal with the suspicious item.

“Due to an abundance of caution, we’ve contained it,” said Sgt. Kelli Brown.

Police called in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad, which could not identify the device, but “safely detonated” it as a precaution.

No one was hurt and the device didn’t immediately appear to be a threat to the community, Brown said. Brown was unable to describe the device and employees declined to comment.

Pickup trucks full of trash backed up along the median on California Avenue as employees in safety vests waited in the shade outside the facility.

The police and employees of the facility do not know who dropped off the device.

“Cars pull in, empty out their stuff and the team sorts everything,” Brown said.

This kind of thing happens sometimes at these events, she said, noting a similar incident early on in the year.

“We discourage people to drop off explosive devices or things that look like they could be explosive,” Brown said.

The recycling event resumed after the device was detonated.
