The American Red Cross is partnering with the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) tomorrow to make Long Beach residents more aware of fire safety.

Beginning at 9:30AM, the LBFD and the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region Home Fire Preparedness Campaign Coalition Teams will conduct door-to-door canvassing of single-family homes in high-risk neighborhoods located in the vicinity of Paramount Blvd. and South St.

The community outreach will involve testing existing smoke alarms, performing free fire preparedness home-safety checks and developing fire safety plans with residents.

Within the Los Angeles Region, Red Cross teams will visit nine additional at-risk neighborhoods in the next 12 months.

“They are visiting areas where there was a significant fire loss,” Heflin said. “Home fires kill an average of seven people everday across the country, and every 40 minutes an injury from a home fire is reported. Roughly 100 times a day fire departments are called to a home fire.”
