Local and state ballot initiatives will be the subject of the latest Beer & Politics discussion at Liberation Brewing Co. in Bixby Knolls Wednesday night.

Councilwoman Jeannine Pearce will be at the event to discuss Measure WW, better known as the hotel panic button measure.

It would require hotels to provide panic buttons for housekeepers and impose limits on the amount of space a housekeeper is allowed to clean.

Pearce is one of four council members who unsuccessfully attempted to pass a previous version of the measure through the city council last year. It was struck down in a 4-5 vote.

In September, council members who opposed that measure successfully passed their own version of the panic button ordinance in a 5-0 vote. Pearce and three other council members who supported the original member walked out in protest.

It’s unclear how this ordinance will be affected if Measure WW passes.

Hotel worker panic button measure would cost city millions in lost revenue, report finds

Housing advocate Josh Butler and Talar Alexanian of the “No on Prop 10” campaign will discuss Prop 10, which could expand cities’ abilities to implement rent control.

If approved, Prop. 10 would repeal a 1995 law known as Costa Hawkins, which prohibits rent control from being implemented on single family homes and on units built before 1995. It also allows landlords to raise rents to market rate after a tenant moves out of a rent controlled unit.

Prop 10 won’t bring rent control to Long Beach, but it could open more units to future ordinances

Butler, under the nonprofit Housing Long Beach for which he is executive director, led an unsuccessful campaign to put a rent control law before voters this year.

Proponents of the rent control ballot initiative failed to garner the required number of signatures. It called for the establishments of residential rent control and “just cause eviction” requirements in Long Beach.

The event, which started at 7:15 p.m. will include a few minutes of discussion from guests and then will be opened up to questions from the audience, according to organizers.

Liberation Brewing Co. is located at 3630 Atlantic Ave.
