Mayor says his mother, stepfather are in hospital and on ventilators with coronavirus
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia announced on Twitter Monday morning that his mother, who is a healthcare worker, and his stepfather tested positive for coronavirus recently and are both hospitalized and on ventilators.
His mother, Gabriella, has worked in the same clinic for 25 years, he said, and “is incredibly careful and understands the seriousness of this virus.”
He said both are in stable condition “and we hope for a full recovery.”
The mayor said he and his husband, Matt, have not interacted with his mother and stepfather directly for many weeks, and both recently tested negative for COVID-19.
The mayor, who has been the most visible face in the city’s effort to combat the impacts of the virus, said he will continue to lead the city through the pandemic “with resolve and compassion.”
My mom is a healthcare worker. She’s worked in the same clinic for over 25 years and is incredibly careful and understands the seriousness of this virus. Thankfully, both are in stable condition and we hope for a full recovery.

They are both receiving heroic care from amazing doctors and nurses.
My husband Matt and I have not interacted with them directly in many weeks, since we have been limiting family interactions due to the virus. We also both recently tested negative.
