4:51pm | To kick off National Safe Boating Week, the U.S. Sailing Center of Long Beach is offering free boat rides on Alamitos Bay during its open house scheduled for this Saturday.

All are welcome to visit the Sailing Center, which is located at the beginning of the peninsula at 5489 E. Ocean Blvd., to receive an introductory sail and learn about the many sailing programs that are available for both adults and kids between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21, said the center’s Glennon Stratton.

Programs offered at the Sailing Center include one designed for for high school-age students during the school year, clinics in the summer and year-round sailing lessons for adults.

Free hot dogs and drinks will be served during the event, and free life jackets will distributed to promote boating safety, Stratton said. Drawings will also be held for free Adult Keelboat Sailing classes and Kids Summer Sailing Camp sessions.

For individuals interested in buying a boat, the Sailing Center has an array of dinghies, sailboats and powerboats in all shapes and sizes that will be available to preview prior to the center’s Annual Marine Yard Sail set for June 18, when they will be available for purchase.
