The Salvation Army Long Beach Corps and Community Center celebrated the grand opening of its newest addition, the Al & Faye Taylor Senior Center, on Wednesday.

Hundreds of community members attended the event, which included free health screenings, massages, a tai-chi class, live music, food and bingo games and prizes. Students from Browning High School and other volunteers also showed their support.

The center will host monthly activities aimed at local seniors like hearing screenings, comedy shows and informational sessions covering topics such as Medicare, according to a statement from The Salvation Army.

The facility is expected to eventually expand to include a gym, workout rooms, health classes and an athletic field with a walking track.

These amenities and services are meant to support local seniors and their families, and the center is the first part of a larger vision for growth in serving the Long Beach region, Salvation Army officials said.
