Following the tragic death of Cal State Long Beach grad Daniel Nguyen, 23, a second hiker slipped and fell to his death during a hike near Mount Baldy on Saturday, February 6. The hiker was the second person to die in a week attempting to scale the trails in the area.

Dong Xing Liu, a 47-year-old resident of Temple City, was hiking alongside his wife when they both slipped and fell down the side of the mountain in the Icehouse Saddle area of Mount Baldy, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Office.

The couple was located by the department’s Aviation Division at 5:34PM, but the air medic personnel were not able to reach them until 8:12PM. Liu was pronounced dead at 8:12PM, according to the report, while the wife was taken to a local hospital.

12 people had to be airlifted that day by both San Bernardino and Los Angeles County rescue crews, according to the Riverside Press Enterprise article. Mount Baldy Fire Chief Graham Hendrickson told the publication that he couldn’t remember a day when they had to execute this many rescues.

“I think it was a beautiful day that attracted a lot of hikers, and it was super icy in parts of the mountains, and even experienced hikers were having problems with it,” Hendrickson said, as quoted by the Press Enterprise.

The trails will be closed until Tuesday, when officials will then evaluate if they should reopen, according to the article.
