7:45am | Should Long Beach ban plastic bags? Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske will host a discussion to answer that question at her upcoming Plastic Bag Town Meeting. The town hall meeting is Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 10:00am at the Long Beach Water Treatment Plant located at 2950 Redondo Avenue (near Spring Street).

The meeting comes just as the City Council prepares to vote on an ordinance that would ban plastic bags at local grocery stores and allow the stores to collect 10 cents for each paper bag used in its place. Click here for columnist Greggory Moore’s thoughts on the issue.

Confirmed panelists include representatives from Heal the Bay, the California Grocers Association, the American Chemist Council and the Sierra Club. Participants will address the effect of plastic bags on the environment, issues and concerns with the prohibition of plastic bags, and a discussion of viable options for Long Beach.
