Southbound Pacific Coast Highway at Channel Drive—near the intersection of Seventh Street—has been closed due to a sinkhole, officials said Monday, April 30.

The city sent out a message on Alert Long Beach advising motorists to avoid the area, though officials in the Public Works Department referred questions to Caltrans, which manages that stretch of roadway. A spokesperson for the state agency did not return a phone call.

The sinkhole is located close to Loynes Drive, near the Bixby Village Golf Course.

In an alert on Tuesday, Long Beach officials said the road is expected to be reopened Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Until then, alternate routes include taking southbound Bellflower Boulevard to Loynes Drive and back to PCH or taking Channel Drive to Bixby Village to Loynes Drive and back to PCH.
