Police say a man shot at another man after they got into a “verbal exchange” outside a motel along a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Central Long Beach Thursday night.

The gunfire missed, police said, but investigators are still trying to track down the suspect, who fled before officers arrived.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. outside 1045 E. Pacific Coast Highway, which is near Lewis Avenue. An LBPD spokesman said he couldn’t elaborate on the verbal exchange that sparked the shooting, but the incident isn’t believed to be gang-related.

Long Beach police say there’s been an increase in shootings recently, but exact numbers weren’t immediately available.

That uptick includes gunfire in the same neighborhood as Thursday’s shooting less than 24 hours prior.

About half a mile away from the motel, three parked cars were hit by bullets around 11:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Linden Avenue, police said.

Nobody reported being hurt. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive and identify any suspects, police said.
